Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack and the Mexican Agriculture Secretary Víctor Villalobos Arámbula will meet in August to discuss Mexico’s ban on the full-imports of fresh U.S. potatoes. Ahead of that meeting, the National Potato Council, Northern Plains Potato Growers Association and others sent a letter to Vilsack and U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, asking them to address regulatory roadblocks and maintain a “trust but verify” stance during the meeting. The U.S. potato industry is concerned fresh access to the Mexican market will only be temporary before Mexican officials come up with a way to halt imports again.
