NDSU Extension Weed Control Specialist Joe Ikley says having a weed management plan is especially important in dry years. “Farmers should try to get a pre-emergence herbicide applied. Keep in mind, water solubility varies in products. For example, Group 15 herbicides like Outlook and Zidua are on the opposite end of the spectrum. Outlook doesn’t take a lot of water, but Zidua takes more water to activate. Also, most of the pre-emergence herbicides we currently use are stable to the environment.” Ikley says there may not be as good of pre-emergence herbicide activity this year, but the herbicides will provide some benefit. Weeds are starting to pop up in the Red River Valley and parts of southwestern North Dakota. “There’s some ragweed, kochia, common lambsquarters and waterhemp.”
