The snow and rain across the Northern Plains coupled with cool temperatures slowed spring planting. Nutrien Ag Solutions Chief Atmospheric Scientist Eric Snodgrass expects the cool temperatures to linger through the end of next week. “The next two weeks will favor cool temperatures. That means we have several more days where frost risk is high,” says Snodgrass. “Planting time isn’t quite ready yet, but the normal last frost date typically isn’t until May anyway.” The grain market is watching the Northern Plains for signs of planting delays or cropping issues. “This could be a region of risk in the upcoming growing season. I wish farmers great success, but I also hate seeing the struggle so early on, especially with the drought.”
