The 2020 crop year was better for American Crystal Sugar Company with one of the fastest harvests on record. American Crystal Sugar Company Board Chairman David Mueller says there were also challenges in the growing season. “Last summer, more extreme weather hit isolated parts of the Red River Valley in the form of torrential rain. Unfortunately, a shorter-than-expected crop resulted in some acres being charged fixed costs once again. While this created more discussion among shareholders and board members, we stayed the course.” One of the bright spots this year for the cooperative is the higher estimated payments at $52 per ton, a result of higher sugar content and lower per ton operating costs. “This is the highest initial payment we’ve had for many years.” Other bright spots include a good sugar program, an extension of the Mexican suspension agreements and good slice rates at the American Crystal factories.
