There’s one thing that is fundamental to economics and that’s supply and demand. Right now, the hog industry is looking at record large supplies. “We’ve got a lot of pigs coming at us in 2020,” said Bill Even, CEO, National Pork Board. “It looks like we are going to exceed the packing capacity in the U.S. by the time we get to October.” Even, who is South Dakota’s former agriculture secretary, says the Pork Checkoff is determined to expand export demand. Thirty percent of U.S. pork will be sold into those international channels this year. Domestic demand is also important. “The good news is the per capita consumption of pork in the U.S. is at 20-year high. The bad news is there is a lot more coming at us. We’ve been talking a lot about the need to be in market with a new marketing campaign for U.S. pork.” The tagline will highlight ‘real pork,’ emphasizing “we’re real farmers, making real food and that’s real pork.”
