Farmers are less optimistic about current conditions, but sentiments improve slightly for the future. The Purdue University/CME Ag Economy Barometer surveys 400 farmers on a monthly basis. Purdue Extension Economist Jim Mintert says about six percent of the farmers in the survey indicated they were going through financial stress. “If you compare that to historical periods, that is not an unusually high number. The percentage of farms suffering stress has been increasing, but it is well levels seen in past historical periods.” The majority of farmers surveyed expect cash rents to remain steady for the year ahead.
