A number of class one railroads are implementing precision scheduled operating logs. National Grain and Feed Association President Randy Gordon says this is reducing railway capacity, staff and the number of locomotives in service. “We’ve seen processing plants have frequency of service cut in half and can no longer operate plants at full capacity,” says Gordon. “It is also taking twice as long for some shipments.” Gordon says this situation is a concern as to what role railroads will play in serving agriculture in the future. “Before the Staggers Rail Act was enacted in the 1980s, about 50 percent of agricultural trade commodities were transported by rail. Now we’re down to about 22 percent, so it’s headed in the wrong direction.” Listen to the interview.
