Northwest Ohio farmer John Motter is typically done with planting at Memorial Day. Not this year. He made two rounds with the sprayer last week just to test equipment. Wet fields are delaying fieldwork for farmers in the eastern Corn Belt. “We’re not talking about severe flooding,” says Motter. “We’ve had a few good storms that have gone through. For the most part, it’s rain after rain after rain just never letting up.” Motter will stick to his corn and soybean rotation through June 5. If he can’t get corn in the ground, he’ll switch acres to soybeans. Prevent plant is being discussed. Motter is trying to stay optimistic. “My father always said weather was a great equalizer. He always said there would be a time to plant, you just needed to be patient with the good Lord and be ready when the light turns green. That’s what we’re all trying to do. It’s hard to sit in the starting blocks all this time.”
