On Thursday, U.S. Trade Ambassador Robert Lighthizer contacted congressional leaders, saying the full U.S. Mexico Canada agreement will be sent to Capitol Hill within 30 days. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi responded, saying the draft wasn’t a positive step in discussions. Pelosi’s support is important to getting USMCA ratified. House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson told the Red River Farm Network Pelosi is the best vote counter in the House. “She isn’t going to send it up if it will fail. Right now, she’s not sure there’s enough votes to pass it. She’s doing due diligence,” explained Peterson. “It’s not the end of the world if this doesn’t get done until September or October, because we’re still operating under the North American Free Trade Agreement. The only problem would be if President Trump decides to cancel NAFTA.” Vice-President Mike Pence said he wants the U.S. Congress to get the agreement ratified by summer. Canada started their ratification process this week.
