National Farmers Union members are meeting in Bellevue, Washington this week to set policy priorities for the year ahead. The farm economy is getting attention.“Net farm income is about half of what it was five years ago. That creates all kinds of stress and difficulties out there for folks who are trying to pay the bills and put a long term plan of viability together,” says NFU President Roger Johnson. “Then, we have these swirling government policies around what we’re doing with trade.” The farm bill is also top-of-mind. USDA Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation Bill Northey updated NFU members on the farm bill implementation process Sunday. The NFU Convention wraps up Tuesday.
