RoughRider Energy plans to build a 240-million-gallon-per-year facility that would use approximately 84 million bushels of corn annually. Morton County officials have approved rezoning the 718-acre project site from agricultural to industrial use. Construction is expected to begin this year, with operations starting in 2029. The plant would also produce distillers grains and corn oil. Carbon dioxide from ethanol production would be captured and transported to a proposed underground storage site in Mercer County. The project could provide another market for corn growers in western North Dakota.
