South Dakota Farmers Union is calling for a temporary reduction in state fuel taxes as high diesel prices continue to squeeze farmers during harvest. SDFU President Doug Somke says allowing red dyed diesel in highway vehicles does not necessarily eliminate the state tax liability. “Now, dyed diesel doesn’t get taxed, but at the same time if you’re using on the highway, there’s nothing in the law in South Dakota statute that says you still won’t be taxed.” Lawmakers are considering their options. “Farmers you can’t do everything,” said Sombke. “But, we see an opening here that has an opportunity to make some clarification of the whole mess that we have.”
