The cost of land, machinery and crop inputs is creating significant barriers for the next generation of farmers. North Dakota Farmers Union President Matt Perdue said access to land is particularly challenging. “The cost of land, whether you’re buying it or you’re cash renting it, is a huge barrier,” said Perdue. “So is the cost of equipment. So is the cost of inputs. It’s never been more expensive to start a farm or ranch.” Perdue said succession planning and beginning-farmer programs will become increasingly important as ownership transitions to another generation.
