Recent rainfall brought welcome moisture to northwest Minnesota, but Norman County farmer Corey Hanson said it came too late to help much of this year’s crop. His farm received more rain in the past ten days than during the previous three months, after receiving less than three inches for much of the growing season. “I was surprised with the wheat that we had a crop at all,” Hanson said. “We had some fall rains last year that helped us put a little recharge back in the subsoil. This is probably year four or five of being dry here.” Wheat produced roughly one-half to two-thirds of a normal crop, but Hanson is more concerned about corn and soybeans. Some corn plants never developed an ear, while others have small ears with poor pollination.
