Soil health and tillage practices were in the spotlight Tuesday at the Northwest Minnesota Tillage Expo in Crookston. University of Minnesota Extension Crops Educator Angie Peltier says the goal isn’t necessarily to convince every farmer to adopt no-till, but to demonstrate how different management practices affect the soil. Farmers were also able to see different tillage implements operating in the field and compare their effects on the soil. Improved soil structure can increase water infiltration when rain does occur and reduce the risk of soil loss. “You can get better water infiltration when we do get rain, and as you know, the rains have been few and far between this summer, and we also have less risk of that soil blowing away.”
