University of Minnesota Extension Educator Jodi DeJong Hughes sees the Northwest Minnesota Tillage Expo as a chance for farmers to compare different tillage systems and equipment in the field. Protecting soil is particularly important in the Red River Valley and surrounding region. “We have some of the most productive soil in the US and the world in this area of North Dakota and Minnesota down into Iowa,” DeJong Hughes said. She points to this spring’s blowing soil as a reminder of how quickly valuable topsoil can be lost. “I think we kind of take it for granted because it is such great soil, it bounces back kinda good, but that’s not going to last if we keep losing it to the air.”
