Soybean cyst nematode remains a major yield threat, while the efficacy of some resistant soybean varieties has declined over the past decade. Much of the resistance in current varieties comes from a breeding source known as PI 88788. Pioneer Agronomy Innovation Lead Mary Gumz recommends soil sampling for SCN every five to six years. “It’s not if you’re going to find cyst nematode in your field; it’s how much you’re going to find because it is such a widespread pest.” Another source of SCN resistance is Peking technology. “In addition to having your resistant varieties, there’s also some cultural things you can do, such as rotation and seed treatment.”
