A five-year USDA study evaluating the financial impact of insects in stored cereal grains reinforces the importance of preparing bins before grain is put into storage. Dr. Johnny Wilson, technical services leader for the specialty crop group at Central Life Sciences, recommends using both dry and liquid products as part of a pre-storage treatment program. “After you get those bins cleaned out before you put anything in there, use a dry product on any of the horizontal surfaces that you can.” Wilson recommends liquid treatment on vertical surfaces where dry products do not adhere as well. Wilson says creating a barrier around stored grain is important because there will inevitably be areas in a bin that are difficult to treat.
