In an early Friday morning social media post, President Donald Trump announced 300,000 metric tons of ground beef will be imported tariff-free for 90 days. Trump said that beef would be sold 25 percent below current market prices. Trump defended this decision when meeting with reporters at Andrews Air Force Base. “We want to get the beef prices down, so we’ll get them down a little bit, and that’s what people want, that’s what the voters want and that’s what I want.” Initially, there was no information on the source of this ground beef. However, Trump responded to a question on his flight home from a South Carolina rally and said Argentina would be among the countries providing beef trimmings to the U.S. “Argentina’s fighting for its life,” stressed Trump. “If I can help them survive in a free world, I happen to like the President of Argentina.” Trump did say the beef coming from foreign sources would be of the highest quality.
