South Dakota cattle producers are balancing strong cattle prices with heat, drought and tight feed supplies. South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association President Craig Bieber says livestock were lost during recent extreme heat. “We had producers that had heavy cattle that were in tough shape through all that.” Any cattle operation with losses should keep detailed records and contact the FSA. Bieber says reduced packing capacity is another concern as cattle producers look to rebuild the cow herd. Bieber was part of this past week’s Dakotafest in Mitchell, South Dakota.
