The 2026 small grain harvest is getting underway across the Northern Plains, with early reports coming from southwest North Dakota and the southern Red River Valley. WestBred Wheat Technical Product Manager Justin Berg said this year’s crop is extremely inconsistent because rainfall varied so much across the region. “It’s no secret they ran out of moisture in the southern Valley towards the latter half of the year, and I think that the yields are probably going to be reflective of that and in the southwest as well, they also ran out of moisture,” said Berg. “It seemed like that rainfall was more towards the northern half of North Dakota and some of that northwest Minnesota area.”
