U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has asked the U.S. International Trade Commission to investigate whether imported fresh, chilled and frozen lamb is causing serious injury to the domestic sheep industry. The move comes after lamb imports have increased more than 500 percent since 1994, while U.S. sheep production has dropped more than 60 percent. If the ITC finds imports are harming domestic producers, it could recommend temporary safeguards, including tariffs or tariff-rate quotas, to help support the U.S. sheep industry.
