Extreme heat and warm overnight temperatures have stressed crops across the Northern Plains. Sean McCoy of McCoy Seed at Northwood, North Dakota, said the corn didn’t get the nighttime recovery they need. “I’m not used to it being 70-plus overnight; your corn plants are not resting,” said McCoy. “They get that chance with normal weather to rest, and you need to be sub-70 degrees. It’s not been that way at all.” Hot weather has also been seen during a critical stage for canola. “With probably all of the canola either finishing flowering or early flowering, this is not ideal. Hopefully it’s able to get some moisture and make it through.”
