North Dakota Beef Commission member Carmel Miller says export markets remain one of the biggest drivers of cattle profitability, adding significant value to every animal marketed. “Export markets add over $435 per head to live cattle prices. For example, South Korea alone adds over $100 per head and Japan runs a close second.” Exports are about much more than premium beef cuts. “We sell a lot of variety meats to export markets, so things such as liver and small intestines, sweetbreads, tripe, basically things that we don’t eat in the United States.” Miller said strengthening international demand will continue to be a top priority for the beef industry as leaders met for the Cattle Industry Summer Business Meeting in Denver.
