With the current temperatures, ranchers are monitoring cattle for heat stress and respiratory issues. Manning, North Dakota rancher Derrick Dukart said water availability is becoming increasingly important. “The cattle are drinking way more water than typically where we’re at for calving season this time of the year,” said Dukart. Dukart encourages producers to provide calves with access to fresh water, noting that hydration can help reduce stress and lower the risk of health problems as summer conditions arrive.
