The Federal Trade Commission has formally launched an investigation into market concentration in the fertilizer industry. FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson said rising fertilizer prices deserve scrutiny. “Fertilizer prices exploded under the Biden administration,” said Ferguson. “The FTC, with the Department of Agriculture, is here to try to figure out why and if the law is being broken, then these fertilizer manufacturers are going to hear from the FTC.” The investigation will focus on potential anti-competitive behavior within the fertilizer sector. The National Corn Growers Association welcomed the move and renewed its call for the administration to remove countervailing duties on phosphate fertilizer imports from Morocco.
