House Agriculture Committee Chairman Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson says fertilizer availability and affordability are directly tied to national security. “Food security is national security,” Thompson said. “One of the most critical inputs farmers need is fertilizer, and for too long we’ve been overly dependent on foreign markets.” Thompson pointed to geopolitical instability following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as evidence of the risks tied to foreign fertilizer dependence. He said Congress and the administration are now pursuing both short-term and long-term strategies to stabilize fertilizer supply chains and expand domestic production.
