Bayer is introducing its first multi-crop seed brand focused on low-carbon intensity crops. “Our goal is to help farmers benefit for this growing global demand for biofuels,” reports Bayer Biofuel Crops Innovation and Commercial Lead Chad Bilby. Bayer’s newgold brand involves the entire value chain. This effort will include camelina. “Which will have spring and winter varieties, very drought-tolerant, winter-hardy crop, pod shatter-resistant, and we’re going to target that for Northern Plains, so specifically right now eastern Montana, western North Dakota, and then southern Saskatchewan, southeast Alberta.” The newgold brand also includes winter canola for Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma. The third crop is covercress, it’s our joint venture that Bayer has with Bunge and Chevron.” Biofuel demand is increasing worldwide, and Bilby said these new oilseed crops can help fill that need.
