National Pork Board Chief Veterinarian Dr. Dusty Oedekoven outlined the new National Swine Health Strategy at Minnesota Pork Congress. That strategy will come up for a vote at next month’s National Pork Forum. One of the goals of this strategy is the elimination of PRRS and the PED virus. “PRRS has been around for several decades and is a very costly disease to the industry, we estimate over $1.2 billion,” said Oedekoven. “That is going to be a long-term effort that is going to take some time to get coordinated on where we go next and how do we lay out a path towards elimination of PRRS.” Oedekoven believes the elimination of the PED virus is more achievable in the short term. Minnesota Pork Congress was held in Mankato.
