Potash is a critical nutrient for crop production, and Saskatchewan supplies a significant share of the world’s needs. Nutrien North American Senior Vice President of Retail, Rob Clayton, called the production process impressive. “It is an incredible process, taking potash from literally a kilometer underground up the mine face and into the mill and then getting on a train and going many thousands of miles to all across North America and indeed right across the planet.” Clayton also highlighted how policy decisions affect affordability for farmers. “For a couple of days, there was a ten percent tariff on potash; it’s now been declared a critical mineral by the administration. There isn’t a tariff on potash as we see it now, and we would obviously hope that that continues. Farmers are under a lot of economic strain at the moment, where commodity output prices are, and they can ill afford additional costs.”
