Observations can be made from the seat of the combine to improve crop prospects in 2026. “If you see some areas that aren’t yielding as well, stop and get out to take a quick look and see if you can diagnose what went on,” advises Darren Hefty, co-owner, Hefty Seed. It may be an insect or disease issue or a problem with the stand. “Once you’ve combined the field, it’s pretty tough for your agronomist to figure out what happened.” If a yield bump is evident, a soil sample is recommended to determine the reason behind it. As the 2025 growing season comes to an end, it is important for farmers to consider the deals available for 2026. “Last year, it was nearly a 20 percent savings when purchasing things in September versus the spring in terms of crop inputs and there are some zero percent financing options available.”
