Despite a record corn crop, Class I railroads are confident about their ability to handle this year’s harvest. According to the USDA Grain Transportation Report, BNSF is maintaining a covered hopper car fleet of 32,000 cars and 140 shuttle trains. Likewise, Canadian Pacific Kansas City is deploying 140 shuttle trains across its network. Union Pacific did not offer specifics on its rail fleet, but highlighted its improved service over the past two-and-a-half years. Canadian National Railway added locomotives and said that will help it respond quickly to any unexpected shifts in demand.
