While China is typically the final destination for U.S. soybean exports, South Dakota Soybean Council director Derrick Scott says farmers can’t rely on just one market for exporting their crop. “Whether it’s whole beans or meal, we’re looking to get into the emerging markets, even smaller markets,” said the Geddes farmer. “Vietnam, in particular, is a country that’s an emerging market and they have a real need for protein. They’re really going to be picking up here in the future.” Expanded markets don’t necessarily mean exporting overseas. “We hope to increase our animal production here in the state so we can use more of the meal. The other big one is biodiesel, and once EPA gets everything approved, this biofuels thing is going to be huge.”
