Union Pacific has announced it will purchase Norfolk Southern Railway for $85 billion. Pending a lengthy regulatory process, this deal will create the country’s first coast-to-coast freight rail operation. The last major merger for Class I railroads was the Canadian Pacific-Kansas City Southern in 2023, valued at $31 billion.
