Innovation and science in agriculture took center stage during Tuesday’s House Agriculture Committee hearing. Committee Chair GT Thompson opened the session with praise for American farmers and the technologies that support them. “We should be proud of that legacy,” said Thompson. “We should also recognize that sustaining it will require us to remain forward-looking and focus on reducing the barriers that stand in the way of continued innovation.” Ranking Member Angie Craig voiced concern over what she called politically motivated attacks on science and food policy. “The moment we begin to stray from these principles is the moment that trust in our food system begins to deteriorate,” Craig said. “I’m concerned with the current administration that seems designed to undermine people’s confidence in our regulatory system, attack innovation, and make it harder for family farmers to do their jobs.”
