In the second quarter of this year, the number of rail grain carloads was up 13 percent from the same period last year. In data from the Surface Transportation Board, grain carload numbers were up more than 30 percent in North Dakota, up 23 percent in South Dakota and down nine percent in Minnesota. Most Class I railroads performed well in the second quarter. The Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railroad was the exception. In early May, the CP operational system took over the entire network and there were localized service problems in the legacy Kansas City Southern system.
