Policy Solutions President Jay Truitt says Senate leadership made key concessions to secure the votes. “They had to buy (Alaska Senator Lisa) Murkowski off basically to get to 50,” Truitt explained. Despite the close margin, Truitt believes the Senate improved the bill. “That’s not something you hear me say very often,” said Truitt. “They further defined some of the points on SNAP and how it’s going to be executed at the state level. People will say it’s a cut, but it’s not; it’s just forcing states to be more accountable and that whole accountability piece brings some satisfaction to core groups like ag groups who say, ‘listen, we’re held to these crazy standards all the time, why isn’t everyone else?’”
