Brazilian officials are advocating for sugar to be included in trade negotiations with the U.S., but the American Sugarbeet Growers Association strongly opposes the move. Executive Vice President Luther Markwart called it a “non-starter,” emphasizing that Brazil already plays a significant role in the U.S. sugar market. “That’s not something that we would support in any way, shape, or form,” Markwart said. “They are already a major supplier to our market. There is absolutely no need to get into a discussion with any additional access or guaranteed access to our market on sugar. So we will strongly oppose that.” He added that Brazil benefits from guaranteed access and additional shipments under tier-two duties, reinforcing the U.S. sugar industry’s stance against further concessions.
