The farm bill and property taxes were the main talking points at the North Dakota Farmers Union’s annual convention Friday and Saturday. “The farm bill is the highest priority federally,” said NDFU President Mark Watne. “On a state level, we’re working on property taxes and local control of determinations of zoning laws. So those will be our two primaries if we go into the legislative session.” Commodities prices also saw a lot of conversation. “Much of the talk is on the price. Farmers want to know what’s going to happen. Secondly, they’re very concerned about input costs. We’ve been working on what’s called the Fairness to Farmers Campaign, trying to get some equity and use antitrust laws to break up some of these large conglomerates that are holding monopolistic practices on some of our pricing issues. So that’s a big issue for us.”
