With a large amount of nitrogen fertilizer used in Minnesota, University of Minnesota West Central Research and Outreach Center Director Mike Reese says green ammonia can aid supply of these fertilizers. “You can take wind or solar energy and use water to electrolyze water, produce hydrogen, pull nitrogen from the air and put them together to form nitrogen fertilizer.” The WCROC works on projects like these in order to produce sustainable practices for the future. “We envision green ammonia going beyond nitrogen fertilizer, crossing sectors and coupling those sectors together.”
