Pulse crops, such as beans and field peas, have advantages in the crop rotation. “They fix nitrogen into the soil directly and improve soil health which reduces the need for nitrogen fertilizers,” said Madison Jacobson, director of marketing, USA Pulses. “Essentially, pulses put their roots down into the soil and the roots are then infected with a bacteria called rhizobia, which is able to convert nitrogen gas from the air into a nitrogen form that the pulse can use to feed itself.”
