For the first time, the H5N1 bird flu virus has been confirmed in a pig. This was a pig raised in a small backyard environment and exposed to wild birds. The farm is not a commercial swine operation and the animals raised there were not intended for commercial food production. The animal has been culled to prevent the spread of the virus. The National Pork Board emphasized there is no concern about the safety of the nation’s pork supply and pork remains safe to eat. USDA reports the risk to human health remains low.
