The optimal time to apply fall nitrogen is when soil temperatures drop below 50 degrees. “There’s wide areas that have not gotten below 50 and that’s 50 degrees at six inches,” says Brad Carlson, extension educator at the University of Minnesota. “We really look at trying to prevent nitrogen from turning into nitrate.” Nitrates are more easily lost, so ensuring the right soil temperature and conditions is crucial to maximize the efficacy of inputs.
