With strong demand for beef, farmers and ranchers have been hesitant to retain heifers, bringing the U.S. cow herd to its lowest level in over 70 years. At the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association, Kintyre rancher Randy Weigel said the low number of cattle is not concerning. “What they have to remember is we sell beef by the pound and not by the head.”
