The flooding that occurred this year was vastly different from recent memory. “In 2022 and 2023, we had historically low water levels,” said Mike Steenhoek, executive director, Soy Transportation Coalition. The locks and dams closed due to high water have since been opened. “Looking forward, we’re very hopeful that the inland waterway system, this maritime highway will be well positioned to handle soybeans, grain, and other commodities when it’s really go time which occurs during the harvest season.”
