A side effect of all the wet conditions has been the concern for herbicide carryover. “It’s easy to forget with how dry we were last summer,” said Joe Ikley, weed specialist, NDSU Extension. “The combination of warm soil temperatures and moisture, ideally after herbicide application, start that degradation process and we didn’t get much degradation last year.” The combination of cooler temperatures and heavy rains this season prevented that degradation process from starting and carryover is allowing weeds to thrive. “We are seeing cases pop up in some areas where many folks weren’t quite expecting that this year.”
