The region has three distinct wheat crops. The first is the early-seeded wheat that went in in the first week two weeks of April. University of Minnesota Extension Small Grains Specialist Jochum Wiersma says the middle crop was seeded in mid-to-late April and the third round of planting happened in mid-May. With the early wheat looking so good, questions have been asked about the benefit of a second fungicide application. “The only time you really see a benefit of that second application is if you combine the premium product on the front side, which would be Miravis Ace, Prosaro Pro or Sphaerex and combine that with one of those other premium products in the second application,” said Wiersma. “By the time you go back to generic Folicur, there isn’t much advantage at all and you’re just as well off with one well-timed application.” Wiersma is seeing a bigger issue with scab in southern Minnesota this season.
