This year’s Midwest Farm Energy Conference theme was ‘Pathways to Decarbonizing Agriculture.’ According to University of Minnesota Green Ammonia Research Lead Michael Reese, using wind and solar power to produce ammonia and urea is a way to double-dip green production in agriculture. “Green ammonia production is going to be with us, it’s almost inevitable. Two percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions are attributed to nitrogen fertilizer production so somewhere down the road, we’re going to see either through policy or markets that we’re going to be going into this area.” Reese said one focus of this research is to ensure that farmers can participate in this effort rather than have multi-national companies control the industry.
