Soil samples in North Dakota signal low populations of overwintering wheat midge larvae for the 2024 growing season. More than 2,000 soil cores were collected from 22 counties last fall. Only ten percent of those sites tested positive for wheat midge. Even the positive cases were low enough that it would not cause yield loss in spring wheat. Scouting remains important, especially for fields that have been in continuous wheat. The wet weather favors the emergence of this pest.
