University of Minnesota Extension Beef Specialist Eric Mousel describes this past year’s cattle market as “bonkers.” However, the cash cattle market hasn’t responded to what the futures market is doing. “It has been pretty level without much movement either way regardless of what the futures are doing.” Mousel sees change on the horizon. “Going forward, I think we’ll probably see feedlots sit this year out either because they can’t find the cattle or they can’t afford them.”
